Award-winning director Murray Lerner’s film Festival! is a cinematic synthesis of four Newport Folk Festivals in which the art of folk music is pictured in transition during its moist crucial years, 1963 - 1966. Featuring Bob Dylan’s notorious first “electric” live performances, which were booed by the acoustic folk purists gathered there, Festival! also captures Peter, Paul and Mary singing their signature version of “If I Had A Hammer,” Pete Seeger, Donovan, Judy Collins and Joan Baez delivering impassioned performances, blues legends like Howlin’ Wolf, Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, as well as blues interpreters the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. But more than presenting the leading lights of blues, folk and country, Festival! depicts the nascent American counter culture that eventually used folk and indigenous music as a focus for their discontent regarding the materialism, lack of authenticity and warmongering they saw in their parent’s generation. Beautifully shot in black and white and originally released in 1967, "Festival!" has never before been available on VHS or DVD.
